When Joshua takes over Jericho, the Israelites moved into Ai in their own flesh, and we learned that their failure comes first from not getting direction from God, and 2nd, having sin in the camp with Achan stealing the spoil. Achan, by the way, means “The Troubler of Israel”. With all of this in the past, we now come to the Gibeonites. Scripture talls us in Chapter 9:3 that the Gibeonites acted wisely. They already knew their demise would be death unless they were to somehow devise a plan to get around it. They did just that! The Gibeonites, although from a city right next to the Israelites, disquised themselves as people from “afar”.
“They resorted to a ruse: They went as a delagation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.”
